Early in the 1980's, beginning the opera segment of her career, Phoebe created shoestring opera, a program to introduce children and interested adults to opera. Singing all roles in solo performance with piano and/or selected children in assigned roles, Phoebe was seen throughout New England in many public schools, civic performances, on television, and in public radio interview.

This Spring, 2008, Phoebe received notice that she is one of 12 selected from approximately 400 applicants in both Arts and Sciences for the thatcher hoffman smith award, a biennial prize award of $40,000. Titled, Creativity in Motion, this award will next be presented in 2009. The 12 selected applicants are the first group to form the newly instituted "Idea Bank" housed in the University of Oklahoma for public perusal.

With shoestring opera. Phoebe became the first person in opera history to condense opera.
